International Math Contests

 

The RTG Department proudly offers students the opportunity to participate in prestigious International Mathematics Competitions, including:

  • WMI – World Mathematics Invitational
  • AIMO – Asia International Mathematical Olympiad

These contests allow students to challenge themselves at a global level and connect with motivated learners from around the world.

 

WMI – World Mathematics Invitational

The World Mathematics Invitational (WMI) is one of the largest international math competitions, attracting students from over 20 countries.
WMI challenges students with creative and logical problems designed to strengthen higher-order thinking.

Highlights:

  • Open to students from elementary to high school levels
  • Unique problem styles that promote creativity and reasoning
  • Opportunities to earn awards, medals, and international recognition
  • Top performers may be invited to the WMI Global Finals

Participation in WMI helps students build confidence and develop advanced problem-solving skills in a global competition setting.

  • Grades: K – 12
  • Preliminary Round: March 18th, 2026 Online
  • Registration Deadline: February 28th, 2026.
  • Global Finals: July 10-14, 2026 in Chiba and Tokyo, Japan
  • Awards Preliminary Round:
    Gold Award: Top 10%
    Silver Award: Next 20%
    Bronze Award: Next 30% or higher than the required mark                           
    Merit: Next 40%

How the Preliminary Round Works

  • Format: 100% online
  • Time Window: Students can write the contest any time between 8:00 AM EST and 2:59 AM EDT the next day. This wide time range accommodates all time zones, especially students on the West Coast.
  • Access Details: Contest access instructions will be sent the a week before the competition. Students will receive step-by-step instructions to log in and complete the test securely from home.

How the Global Finals Works

  • Students who got Gold, Silver or Bronze Award qualify to compete on the Global Finals
  • In person in Chiba and Tokyo
  • Travel to the global round is optional and at family’s own expense.
  • WMI offer a tourism package for students and parents to participate in the contest 
  • Full details will be shared with qualifying students.

 

AIMO – Asia International Mathematical Olympiad

The Asia International Mathematical Olympiad (AIMO) is a highly respected contest that focuses on deep mathematical understanding and problem-solving techniques aligned with Olympiad-style thinking.

Highlights:

  • Designed for students seeking an advanced mathematical challenge
  • Problems require logical reasoning, pattern recognition, and multi-step solutions
  • Strong performance can lead to invitations to AIMO Finals
  • Recognized across Asia and internationally as a competitive academic achievement

AIMO is ideal for students who enjoy rigorous, analytical math challenges and are looking to expand their competition experience.

  • Grades: 1 – 12
  • Preliminary Round: March 19th, 2026 Online
  • Registration Deadline: February 28th, 2026.
  • Global Finals: August 1-5, 2026 in Hanoi, Vietnam
  • Awards Preliminary Round:
    Gold Award: Top 5%
    Silver Award: Next 15%
    Bronze Award: Next 20% or higher than the required mark
    Merit: Next 20%
    Participation: Next 40%
